If we leave the photo, what about just using the following text below it (pre/post text). I used the word 'fresh' instead of new, so that 3month old forums don't still say 'new'.
You're looking at a pretty fresh forum.
So fresh in fact, that instead of showcasing its hottest conversations here, we've decided to suggest a few links that you might find useful. Add a photo or video to a conversation to have it featured here.

I've sketched out a few thoughts taking some concepts from gmail, i've put together a list of all things that concern me when I come to a forum (this is true for universe today, for flight of the conchords, for lefora labs, etc.)
* I want to see new things from certain categories (for instance on UT, i don't care about astronomy posts, just like some UT ppl seem to be seperate from BA posts.)
- This could be down via a text filter menu like we sketched up in the past. A time of last (day/week/month/all) would be nice to go along with this if it's a view I always come back to. I'd like to save categories/time as a 'default' view to come back to.
* I want to mark things as read (similar to email/rss feeds), this could be done with a check box.
* I want to know how many replies exist in a thread
* I want to know if I've spoken in a thread (either as a comment or thread autor), this could be indiciated with a little icon
* I want to know if their are any new direct replies to something I've said.
And something separate from this, I'd like to see a linear view of all posts (threads & replies) sorted by date, newest first (as a forum organizer or active user)
from andrew:
But there's just one super essential thing that would need to be done before showing anyone the new things page.
It needs to sort the list by the time of the last reply, rather than the time of the thread creation as it does now. I don't have time now before the internets dry up...
since the UT folks are talking about something similiar to our new things view, it was mentioned yesterday not to just throw the url at them, but put some of our thoughts behind it first to how we'd want it, then show it to them.
so what are some thoughts/feedback on things we'd like to tweak abit?

there's a bunch of minus's in there though, not just at the end of 40char or whatever.
actually, it seems to be a bug, if you copy and paste the urls above into a text editor, this is what you get:
http:/-/-http:/
weird, i'll open a ticket
those links seem to be broken, try this:
