sIFR is a way of using non standard fonts on webpages by replacing texts with flash controls that render the text in a given font. It's quite widely used nowadays, and could be one of the ways of letting people use custom styling.

Here's a description:

It's not something we'd be doing any time soon or anything critical at all, but I just wanted a place where I could write some thoughts and discuss it. While it's a pretty cool technique, and is fully accessible (it degrades perfectly for non flash non js sites), I see too many holes in it..

- it does not scale in size along with the browser text
- it performs anti aliasing different than native renderers (such as cleartype for windows), actually worse quality
- when used on elements that are linkable, you can no longer open these in separate tabs by mid+clicking on it
- browser right click menu is restricted to copy/paste, losing all other functionality such as open in new window/tab, bookmark, send link

Also, you lose the default context menus when right clicking :-/

Yeah, I don't know much about it, but all those negatives you pointed out are quite bad.
