Trying to stay current on this forum, it's become difficult to read all new posts/threads since the last time I've visited.
I think if there was a pretty flat view across time of all threads/replies in reverse date order, it'd be very easy for me to get a quick overview of what was said. To understand the context of a reply, I could simply click it to go straight into the forum. I would imagine visually differentiating between new threads and replies (bigger text, diff bg color?)
As a forum organizer on conchords take flight, this is something I'd want to see to get a 'feel' for how active my forum is. I don't always want to reply, but I want to see where ppl are talking.
Any thoughts on where to take this?
Also, if we click on a widget title, such as 'Recent Posts', it could bring you straight to this view. Maybe all the widget titles should have a 'larger' view to take you to, recent posts, hot convos, categories, members, etc.
RSS feeds are now working for "secret" communities, like this one, because I had the same problem you did keeping track of postings. I found myself using the Recent Posts widget to see if I was up to date, and it worked alright because of the few number of posts in the system.
thanks, so two things:
1. my feedreader doesn't seem to be picking up the changes (even though the raw rss feed shows new changes - is there some sort of read vs. unread logic?
2. With the thread question above, i was thinking as that for a view for each member of a forum, but not as an rss feed, more of a link they could click on.
Couple things, there was a bug in the RSS url generator until yesterday evening that caused the feeds to time out. You could test this by refreshing the page and noticing that the link generated each time had a different "token." Now, if you refresh the front page, you should always get the same link for the same feed. Second, google reader, for example, doesn't pull from the feed source when you request a refresh--there is some holdover period where they haven't updated what's their internal cache, so you don't see the latest version of the feed.
While RSS solves this well I do agree that it's a nice thing to have on the site itself as well. If I casually watch a handful of forums I might not want to add them all to my feed reader. The idea of clicking on "Recent Posts" makes sense though not an obvious way to get there unless you know it already.
It would be nice for the view to be customized for you. That is, removing all posts/threads that you've already read and which don't have any new replies.
yeah, this could go inline with the filtering (unread by default), but you can uncheck an 'unread' box to view all. Sometimes it's nice to have an idea of activity at different times by getting a full 'dump' of everything.
Maybe when we build out the filters, this could be part of that, so if you click 'forum', depending on your filter options, this is one of the views.
* that said, a far off future feature, could be to have the organizer select some 'views' which are preset filters that are linked from a widget - whatever makes the most sense for that forum.
