Getting Forum Content to the Top of the Homepage

Was looking at https://meetro.descolada.com/trac2/ticket/621, and thinking about our original reasoning for doing it the way we did:

  • The homepage looks better with a picture than it does without, even if it's not own of their own.
  • That we wanted the layout to remain as consistent as possible between the transitional phases of the homepage for a new forum.
  • That users would be compelled to add their own content to get the default stuff out of the way.
So, for those reasons, I'm not a big fan of just removing that picture section completely.  However, I think we should at the very least get the forum's content to the top of the homepage as soon as possible.

So I think a decent solution would be, after having made a first post (without a picture), the "What is this page?" and "Let's jump in." sections should be replaced with that post.  The champagne pic would stay, keeping the layout consistent and appealing.

One additional thing we might do is after that first post, change the text underneath the champagne pic to something more explanatory, like "adding a post with a photo will get rid of this," instead of "Welcome to this new forum," which doesn't make as much sense since they've already posted.

Thoughts?

If we leave the photo, what about just using the following text below it (pre/post text).   I used the word 'fresh' instead of new, so that 3month old forums don't still say 'new'.

You're looking at a pretty fresh forum.

So fresh in fact, that instead of showcasing its hottest conversations here, we've decided to suggest a few links that you might find useful.  Add a photo or video to a conversation to have it featured here.

Yea... replacing the text would be good.  I think a bit shorter and more explanatory would be good.  Like ...

"You're looking at a pretty fresh forum.  Until you upload a photo or video this will act as a placeholder.  Click "here" to upload a photo or video."

the 'here' would be a link to a start a conversation.

i think the 'click here to upload a photo or video' feels like you're uploading content to the site (where does it belong?), instead of starting a new conversation.
